Navigating the Connection of Euphemisms and Taboo Words: Language, Culture, and Societal Reflections
Abstract
This article examines the intricate relationship between euphemisms and taboowords, exploring how cultural, historical, and societal factors shape their use and evolution. Euphemisms soften expressions for socially or morally sensitive topics, while taboo words often carry cultural and emotional weight, reflecting fears, social norms, and historical attitudes. Through examples from language history, including Victorian prudishness and American linguistic shifts, the article delves into how euphemisms adapt to societal needs, occasionally becoming taboo themselves. Additionally, the piece discusses swearing, terms of abuse, and their cultural implications, highlighting the dynamic nature of language and the role of euphemisms in societal discourse.
