Contemporary Britain. Times of change

Abstract

This articlebuilds a contemporary image of Britain, including important issues that imprint on its national identity. Current events like Brexit are of notable relevance and need to be brought into discussion. Most of us share a rather vague definition of national identity. Two notions that get intertwined are national identity and citizenship. A good example are the Scottish, the English, the Welsh and the Irish, whose national identities lie within their territories, but whose passports show that they are all British citizens. But a nationalist spirit awakes in people when comparing themselves to others. “This may be to assert similarity but they often express their national identity by contrasting it to that of others, by delineating who (or what) they are not.”
