Abstract

Networking is often hailed as essential for career advancement, especially in high-tech leadership. However, for women, networking functions as both a gateway and a gatekeeper—offering opportunities while reinforcing systemic exclusion. This study explores the paradoxes of professional networking through a gendered lens, combining recent literature with qualitative insights from women in senior high-tech roles. The findings are structured using the metaphor of “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” “The Good” highlights how strategic networking—including mentorship programmes, women-focused forums, and industry events—can accelerate women’s visibility, sponsorship, and promotions. “The Bad” addresses the exclusionary nature of informal male-dominated networks, such as military alumni ties, late-night events, or sports-based meetups, which often determine executive access. “The Ugly” reveals how networking can penalise women who self-promote or seek sponsorship, exposing them to reputational risks, gendered double standards, and exclusion under the guise of caution or compliance. Integrating participant quotes, this article shows how networking—while framed as meritocratic—is embedded with gendered barriers. The article concludes with actionable recommendations to redesign networking spaces, establish structured sponsorship programmes, and redefine leadership pipelines. By exposing the hidden dynamics of high-tech networking, this study offers a pathway toward a more inclusive and equitable leadership culture. Based on 19 semi-structured interviews (17 women, 2 men) in Israeli high-tech, the analysis links qualitative patterns to targeted, system-level fixes.
